Welcome to Ghormley.org, the fulfillment of a decade-old dream of mine. I have had an interest for years in collecting and sharing the history of our family, but have never been able to do it satisfactorily before. This site is dedicated to the history of the Ghormley family (click here for links to other Ghormley sites) and may someday serve in some humble capacity as an overall Ghormley community site.
If you'd like to learn more about Hugh Ghormley, the first known ancestor in America, click here. You can also read about Gorm den Gamle (the first Danish king) or the Irish O'Gormleys.
In 1910, my great-grandfather, John Ray Ghormley, worked his way to Europe on a cattleboat. Click here to see more about his journey.
In early 1998, my father spent 6 weeks floating on a ice pack 200 miles north of Alaska. Click here to read his rather gripping tale.
My great-uncle has recently put up his memoirs.
There is also a page of links to other Ghormley sites.
At the moment, this site its very early stages. I have additional material myself to add in the coming weeks and I hope that there are a number of you out there who would like to contribute your own stuff as well. (I don't have a great way set up yet for would-be contributors to load large volumes of stuff (digital audio or scans), but I will be working on that shortly.)
This site is run by Doug Ghormley.
Accounts
One of the benefits of the software that's running this web site is that it provides a collaborative environment with accounts that people can sign in with in order to add to or edit the content of the web site. Each account is given its own little home page where you can put up pictures, links to your favorite sites, etc. While this server doesn't have the horsepower or bandwidth to support accounts for anyone on the Internet who wants one, if you're part of my extended family and have some Ghormley history stuff you'd like to post or would like your own little corner of ghormley.org, send me an email and we'll talk. In order to get an account, you'll have to agree to these excessively obvious terms.
